We werent expecting any of this when we created Twitter over 12 years ago. [Tristan] When you think about technology and it being an existential threat, you know, thats a big claim, and its easy to then, in your mind, think, Okay, so, there I am with the phone scrolling, clicking, using it. [Joe] Theres no fiscal reason for these companies to change. Its not like theyre trying to benefit us. [Ben] Oh, there is. Social media isnt a tool thats just waiting to be used. [Randima (Randy) Fernando] Perhaps the most dangerous piece of all this is the fact that its driven by technology thats advancing exponentially. Much has been written by now about the documentary that first aired on Netflix at the end of August 2020after months of pandemic restrictions in which people were . And so, every day, it gets slightly better at picking the right posts in the right order so that you spend longer and longer in that product. Uh [laughs] I still am not 100 percent sure how this originally came about, but the idea that ordering a pizza meant ordering a trafficked person. Netflix just released a new documentary called The Social Dilemma. They hold optimism despite the fears of dystopia. We probably ruin the global economy. Whats this video Mom just sent us? [Tristan] What were seeing with COVID is just an extreme version of whats happening across our information ecosystem. I mean, we have a basic biological imperative to connect with other people. Tons and tons of computers, as far as the eye can see. [chuckles] No one does. [Justin] [clicks tongue] Yeah, it is hard to give a single, succinct Im trying to touch on many different problems. One of the most worrying effects of social media, as outlined in The Social Dilemma, is its negative impact on our body image. Addeddate. Even more horrifying, we see the same pattern with suicide.
